Derby will play host to one of Britain’s most distinctive modern folk voices this winter when Beans on Toast performs at The Old Bell Hotel on Wednesday 3 December. Known for his warm wit, heartfelt honesty and sing-along choruses, the Essex-born songwriter has built a loyal following across the UK, and his Derby show promises an intimate night of music and storytelling in one of the city’s most historic venues.

A Folk Singer for Modern Times

Beans on Toast, the stage name of Jay McAllister, has carved out a unique place in British music over the past 15 years. His songs balance humour with sincerity, often touching on politics, love, travel and everyday life. Delivered with a conversational charm and a guitar in hand, his performances capture the timeless quality of folk music while speaking directly to contemporary audiences.

Since his debut album Standing on a Chair in 2009, he has released a new record almost every year, creating a catalogue that reflects the shifting moods and challenges of the times. His most recent work continues to showcase his knack for weaving big ideas into simple, singable folk songs, reaffirming his reputation as one of the UK’s most consistent and down-to-earth storytellers.

From Festival Fields to Iconic Stages

While Beans on Toast thrives in intimate venues like the Old Bell, he is equally at home on festival fields and legendary stages. He has played Glastonbury more than a dozen times, appeared at Boomtown, Green Man and Beautiful Days, and toured extensively across Europe and the US. Along the way he has supported celebrated acts including Frank Turner, Billy Bragg, Kate Nash, Passenger and The Levellers, sharing their emphasis on socially conscious songwriting and community-driven performance.

Derby Date in a Historic Setting

The Old Bell Hotel, a Grade II–listed landmark on Sadler Gate, will provide the perfect setting for this Derby show. With its centuries-old character and reputation for live entertainment, the venue offers a unique backdrop for an artist whose music often celebrates tradition while pushing it into fresh territory. Doors open at 7:30 pm, with tickets available for £17.

More Than Just a Folk Singer

What sets Beans on Toast apart is his ability to make the everyday feel extraordinary. His songs cut through the noise with plain-spoken honesty, blending humour, heart and social awareness in a way that feels both timeless and relevant. Rather than hiding behind polish or pretence, he invites audiences into his world with openness and charm, reminding listeners that music can be as much about connection as it is about performance. For many fans, a Beans on Toast gig isn’t just a concert — it’s a shared experience of stories, laughter and truth told through song.
