Despite freezing temperatures outside, the room was absolutely rammed, hot, and heaving with bodies, packed in tight and buzzing with anticipation.
GHRUL’s First Ever Show and an Explosive Statement
Opening the night were GHRUL, playing their very first live show and immediately making it clear that this was not going to be a quiet introduction. Billing themselves as East Midlands Sludge, what followed was exactly that, but with an added layer of sleaze, groove and sheer volume.
For a debut performance, the turnout alone said everything. A strong crowd had turned up early specifically to see them, which is a great sign not just for the band but for the wider Derby local music scene. From the first crushing riff, heads were banging wall-to-wall. The set was relentless, groove-driven, dirty and unapologetically loud. Every track hit hard, and the response from the room was immediate and feral.
They smashed through a blinding set, and the roars between songs made it clear the crowd were fully locked in. Considering this was their first time on stage, the confidence and impact were seriously impressive. An outstanding debut, and a band that already feels destined to become a regular fixture on heavy line-ups across the region.
Raptorgeist Deliver Heavy Metal Done Right
Following that intensity, Raptorgeist took to the stage with the room still packed out, which is always a good sign. Where GHRUL brought sludge and filth, Raptorgeist delivered classic, riff-driven heavy metal, tight, experienced and thunderously loud.
Their set was packed with heavy riffs, soaring high-pitched solos and undeniable stage presence. The band’s experience showed, everything locked in, sharp and powerful. A standout moment came with their cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, which sent the crowd into full head-banging mode, with bodies moving and fists in the air.
The atmosphere stayed electric from start to finish, with the audience fully engaged and clearly loving every second.
Another Essential Night at The Vic Inn
That this was a completely free gig only adds to how special the night felt. The Victoria Inn continues to be a cornerstone of Derby’s alternative and heavy music culture, providing a space where new bands can break through and established acts can thrive, all while pulling in passionate, packed-out crowds.
A fantastic night from start to finish, an unforgettable debut for GHRUL, a powerful set from Raptorgeist, and yet another reminder of why the Vic Inn remains one of the best live music venues in the city.
