After the indulgence of Christmas and the inevitable snap back to work, MUSIKBOX Presents on Thursday 15 January 2026 felt like a reset button for the city. A room full of familiar faces, new bands, loud guitars and genuine atmosphere combined to banish the winter slump in one hit.
As ever, MUSIKBOX delivered a carefully curated night celebrating the depth of Derby’s local talent. The Vic Inn steadily filled throughout the evening, the hum of anticipation growing with every pint poured. This was grassroots music in its purest form: accessible, communal and unapologetically loud.
Opening proceedings were Solar Flare, a grungey, sludgy three-piece who immediately set a heavy, immersive tone. Drawing clear influence from the 90s, their sound sat somewhere between the brooding weight of Basement and the emotive grit of Pearl Jam, with flashes of indie woven through. Gritty vocals climbed from restrained verses into powerful yells and near-screams, while choppy, groove-led drums were played with real heaviness. It was raw, confident and absorbing, an opener that demanded attention rather than easing people in gently.
Next up, Drednaut pushed the energy up several gears. Blending hard rock and grunge with a sharp metallic edge, their set was built for movement. Commanding vocals drenched in distortion soared over thick riffs and screaming lead lines, shifting effortlessly between high screeches and low growls. There was a strong 80s and 90s rock and roll DNA running through the set, but sharpened into something heavier and more aggressive. It was pure headbanging music, the kind that encourages you to throw your hair around and forget everything outside the room.
Headlining the night were The Red Line, delivering a noisy, energetic indie rock set that blurred genre lines and kept the crowd locked in from start to finish. Soulful vocals rose into bitey yells before exploding into raw, Cobain-like screeches, with grunge influences cutting through a wall of sound. Heavy drums, complete with double pedal work, added an almost metal weight to the set, giving their songs a physical presence that filled the venue.
One of the night’s standout moments came with their bold and brilliantly reworked cover of Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars. Stripped of polish and rebuilt with distortion and volume, it became a big, noisy crowd-pleaser that summed up The Red Line’s playful confidence and refusal to stick to one lane.
By the end of the night, it was clear that this was more than just MUSIKBOX’s first gig of the year. It was a reminder of why Derby’s grassroots music scene continues to thrive, and why venues like the Victoria Inn remain vital cultural spaces. Nights like this give local bands room to grow, audiences something real to connect with, and the city a sense of momentum moving forward.
