Southpaw Grammar Sounds the Alarm on UK Garage Anthem ‘Trouble Coming’

Derby producer Southpaw Grammar is back with ‘Trouble Coming’, a UK garage-influenced anthem tackling division, distrust and the increasingly hostile way we seem to talk to each other.

Released on 7 August, the track pairs shimmering garage rhythms, a weighty bassline and an infectious vocal hook with a considerably heavier message. Rather than taking political sides, ‘Trouble Coming’ looks at how ordinary people are increasingly encouraged to see one another as enemies while many of the problems affecting everyday life remain unresolved.

“There’s trouble coming… who knows where we’re going.”

That recurring refrain captures the uncertainty running through the track. Constant headlines, social media outrage and competing narratives have created a world where it can feel increasingly difficult to know who or what to believe.

Southpaw Grammar’s answer isn’t another political slogan. Instead, the track calls for honesty, compassion and a little more recognition of the things we have in common.

Musically, though, this is still very much a UK garage track. Co-composed and produced alongside Derby-based producer and songwriter PADS, ‘Trouble Coming’ combines bright melodies, propulsive two-step rhythms and a thick bassline that gives it genuine dancefloor energy. The upbeat production provides an interesting contrast to lyrics dealing with political tribalism, online hostility and economic inequality.

The track reaches its emotional peak with a closing message inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s famous appeal to the “better angels of our nature”, turning the song from an observation of modern division into a call for solidarity.

For Southpaw Grammar, it continues a growing run of music that combines UK garage nostalgia with contemporary production and thoughtful lyricism rooted in everyday working-class life.
