Derby’s skate scene is preparing for one of its biggest days in years as the Escapism Bank Holiday Battle takes over Flo Skatepark on Monday 31 August. Running from 10am until 6pm, the event brings together international guests, major competitions, beginner sessions, independent traders and thousands of pounds in prizes for a full day built around skateboarding culture.

Organised by Dan Webz and Escapism, the Bank Holiday Battle is being billed as one of the largest skate competitions the UK has seen in some time. That might sound like a bold claim, but the numbers behind it suggest this is much more than the average local skate jam. The latest announcements promise an £8,000 cash prize pool, with more than £11,000 in cash and products being given away throughout the day.

Competitions will take place across street, vert and freestyle skateboarding, giving riders from several different disciplines an opportunity to compete. Special guests are travelling to Derby from around the world, including American professional skateboarder Jeff Dechesare, while one skater will leave Flo with a full year of sponsorship from the Escapism shop.

The scale of the competition should bring some genuinely high-level skating into the city, but the event has also been designed to offer plenty for spectators, families and people who are completely new to skateboarding. Beginner lessons will run alongside the main contests, with pop-up skateboarding stalls, Pokémon traders, prizes and other activities filling out the programme. It should feel closer to a one-day celebration of skate culture than a competition aimed solely at experienced riders.

That wider approach is important. A big prize fund might attract skaters from across the country, but the long-term value comes from allowing younger visitors to watch professionals, try skating for themselves and become part of the local community. Derby already has a rich skateboarding history, and hosting an event of this size in the middle of the city gives that culture a platform that is difficult to ignore.

Another Major Moment for Flo Skatepark

The Bank Holiday Battle arrives only a few months after Flo Skatepark officially opened its new home inside Derbion. The 20,828-square-foot facility includes an indoor vert ramp, bowl, street plaza and dedicated beginners’ area, giving Derby a world-class indoor space for skateboarding and other wheeled sports.

Its April launch event offered an early glimpse of the venue’s potential. More than £800 in cash and prizes were available across bowl, vert and best-trick competitions, with free lessons, an open street course and giveaways throughout the day. It was a successful opening statement for Flo and showed that the new venue could deliver much more than everyday skate sessions.

Seeing another substantial event arrive so soon afterwards is therefore hugely encouraging. The launch could easily have been treated as a single celebration before Flo settled into a quieter routine, but the Escapism Bank Holiday Battle suggests there is already an appetite to keep building. Bringing international skaters, national attention and a serious prize purse into Derby strengthens Flo’s position as a destination rather than simply a local facility.

The skatepark’s location inside Derbion also places skateboarding directly within the life of the city centre. It makes the event accessible to families, casual visitors and people who might never normally attend a skate competition, while giving Derby’s established skate community a permanent indoor home designed with their needs in mind.

Hopefully, this is the beginning of a genuinely year-round programme at Flo. Regular competitions, exhibitions, workshops, brand collaborations and community events could turn the space into one of Derby’s most interesting cultural venues. Skateboarding naturally overlaps with music, fashion, photography and independent art, leaving plenty of room for Flo to become a meeting point for the city’s wider creative scene.

For now, the Escapism Bank Holiday Battle represents another major step forward. With competitions across multiple disciplines, international guests, beginner activities and more than £11,000 in cash and products on offer, it has the makings of one of the biggest skate events Derby has hosted.

The Escapism Bank Holiday Battle takes place at Flo Skatepark, Derbion Shopping Centre, on Monday 31 August 2026 from 10am until 6pm. Tickets are available through Eventbrite
