Five Years of the Kumite: KCW Celebrates Its Fifth Anniversary at The Hairy Dog

Kumite Championship Wrestling is celebrating five years of independent wrestling in Derby with a huge anniversary show at The Hairy Dog on Sunday 16 August.

KCW V: The Fifth Anniversary marks five years of the Kumite with an afternoon packed with championship matches, familiar KCW faces, new wrestlers entering the promotion and the sort of organised chaos Derby wrestling fans have come to expect.

Doors open at 2pm for the strictly over-18s show, with three KCW championships on the line across a stacked card. World Champion Blueshe faces heavyweight challenger Franco Fate, Antonio Gonzalez defends the Deathwolf Championship against Luke Douglas, and BTT put the Double Dragon Championships on the line against Alton Thorne and B.A Rose.

Five years is a serious achievement for an independent wrestling promotion, and KCW has built its own following in Derby while creating shows that feel completely at home inside The Hairy Dog. The fifth anniversary is a chance to celebrate what the promotion has built so far, but the card isn’t simply looking backwards, with new faces entering the Kumite alongside some of its established favourites.

What is Kumite Championship Wrestling?

If you’ve never been to a Kumite show before, KCW is an independent professional wrestling promotion based around Derby, bringing live wrestling into the much more intimate surroundings of The Hairy Dog rather than a traditional arena. That puts the crowd right on top of the action and gives the shows the atmosphere of an underground gig mixed with the spectacle, characters and storytelling of professional wrestling.

The promotion leans heavily into the louder and more alternative side of wrestling, with larger-than-life characters, championship rivalries, tag teams and matches that can get considerably more chaotic than your average Sunday afternoon sporting activity. It is wrestling designed for an adult crowd, hence the strictly over-18s rule, and it fits naturally alongside the punk, metal and alternative culture already associated with The Hairy Dog.

You don’t need to have followed five years of KCW storylines to turn up either. Like any good wrestling show, knowing the rivalries adds another layer, but you can just as easily walk in for the first time, pick someone to cheer for, decide who you absolutely cannot stand and let the wrestlers do the rest.

The anniversary show celebrates the wrestlers and rivalries that have helped build the Kumite so far, while bringing some new faces into the promotion for whatever comes next.

Three KCW championships on the line

At the top of the card, KCW World Champion Blueshe defends the title against Franco Fate in what the promotion is promising will be a proper heavyweight clash. Fate gets his opportunity at the biggest championship in the Kumite, but taking it means getting through the current champion on an afternoon where nobody is likely to be interested in playing things safe.

The Deathwolf Championship is also on the line as champion Antonio Gonzalez faces Luke Douglas. The self-proclaimed ’21st Century Hero’ meets ‘The Usurper’ with the belt at stake, adding another championship fight to an already packed anniversary show.

Then there are the KCW Double Dragon Championships, with BTT defending against Alton Thorne and B.A Rose. KCW’s own assessment of this one is probably difficult to improve upon: “This one’s gonna be fuckin nuts.” We’ll take their word for it.

Three teams, one match and a lot of beef

The tag division gets even more chaotic with a three-way tag match between HEFT, Queer & Loathing and Hellbound, putting three of the Kumite’s favourite teams into the ring at the same time.

Multi-team matches tend to abandon anything resembling order fairly quickly, and with six wrestlers involved this has all the ingredients for one of the afternoon’s more chaotic encounters. KCW has described it as “multi team madness”, which sounds about right.

There is more unfinished business elsewhere on the card as Joey Slade of Hellbound takes on Jack Bennett. Bennett is looking for what KCW describes as some “straight edge revenge”, giving the singles match a little more personal animosity than your average anniversary bout.

New blood enters the Kumite

The fifth anniversary isn’t entirely about looking backwards. Some new blood is entering the Kumite too, including Mordekai Shaw, who has been thrown straight into a triple threat against two former Deathwolf Champions.

Shaw faces Danny Darko and Big F’N Joe, which isn’t exactly a gentle introduction. With two former champions standing opposite him, it is an immediate opportunity for a newcomer to make an impression, although surviving the match might be a decent first objective.

Another arrival brings a considerably more sinister edge to proceedings. ‘The Pig’ Bo Carter finally enters the Kumite to face Tommbie, billed as the ‘Deathmatch Slasher’. KCW is selling this one with the simple warning of “Oh, the horror”, and given the two people involved that may turn out to be less promotional hype and more sensible preparation.

Across the card there is a good mixture of established KCW names, championship stakes and wrestlers making their way into the promotion. For an anniversary show, that feels appropriate. It celebrates the characters and rivalries that have helped build the Kumite while introducing some of the people who could become part of whatever comes next.

Five years of the Kumite in Derby

Independent wrestling and independent music venues have always made good bedfellows. There is a shared DIY spirit to both, and The Hairy Dog feels like a natural home for the slightly unhinged world KCW has created over the past five years.

The fifth anniversary is therefore more than another date on the wrestling calendar. It is a chance to celebrate five years of an independent Derby promotion continuing to put on shows, build its own audience and create something that feels distinctly its own.

With three championships being defended, a three-way tag match, new wrestlers entering the Kumite and plenty of existing grudges waiting to be settled, KCW doesn’t appear to be approaching its birthday quietly.
