Kumite Combat Wrestling returned to Derby’s Hairy Dog on Sunday afternoon and, judging by the packed room, the promotion has absolutely no intention of slowing down in 2026. Fresh from their recent film screening and riding a wave of momentum, Kumite opened their new season with their first sell-out show at the venue, proving once again that Derby’s appetite for controlled chaos remains very much alive.

From championship matches and brutal grudge fights to needles, nettles and more than a few moments that had the crowd simultaneously laughing and wincing, this was a card that rarely stopped long enough for anyone to catch their breath.

The afternoon opened with the Double Dragon Championship as reigning champions BTT defended against Hellbound. The challengers entered as clear underdogs and initially looked overwhelmed as BTT isolated one half of the team and systematically dismantled him. The Hairy Dog crowd quickly rallied behind the struggling challenger, encouraging him through every punishment handed out by the champions.

Eventually the tide began to turn as his partner entered the fray and evened the odds, creating a far more competitive contest. Despite the late resurgence, BTT showed exactly why they remain champions, weathering the storm and retaining their titles in front of a chorus of boos from the Derby crowd.

The second contest saw Franco Fate take on Henry Faust in what was arguably the most athletic match of the afternoon. Franco received a hero’s welcome from the audience, while Henry spent much of the match drawing abuse from ringside.

What followed was a hard-fought battle that pushed both competitors to their limits. At one stage both men collapsed to the canvas and were counted down simultaneously. Refusing to quit, they dragged themselves back to their knees and continued trading blows. Henry resorted to grabbing Franco’s beard as frustration began to set in, but the crowd’s support never wavered.

Eventually Franco turned the momentum back in his favour and secured the victory to one of the loudest reactions of the afternoon. In a refreshing moment after such a brutal encounter, the two competitors embraced in the ring, earning respect from everyone in attendance.

By the time the third match arrived, staff were loading the ring with an assortment of weapons including chairs, bins and even a cricket bat, making it clear that things were about to descend into complete madness.

Luke Douglas, Toombie and Big F***ing Joe collided in a chaotic triple threat match that began before Joe’s entrance music had even finished playing. Joe immediately announced his presence in typically subtle fashion before spending much of the match alternating between violence and comedy.

At one point he casually set up a chair in the ring and simply watched the other two competitors fight. Toombie then introduced a handful of needles into the equation, driving them into Joe’s head to the horror and delight of those watching. Chants of “You Sick F***” echoed around The Hairy Dog as the punishment escalated.

One particularly memorable moment saw Joe strike Toombie with a chair that somehow landed perfectly upright in the centre of the ring, drawing cheers simply for defying the laws of physics. Luke Douglas played the unlikely hero late on, preventing Joe from being counted out, before the giant eventually recovered and pinned Toombie to take the victory.

The World Openweight Championship followed, with champion Blueshe defending against Harley Harris.

Support was split throughout the venue, with chants for both competitors echoing around the room. The action quickly spilled outside the ring and into the crowd, smashing through barriers and involving bamboo sticks as the contest became increasingly difficult to contain. One of the standout chants of the afternoon rang around the venue as fans sang, “She’s blue, she’s bad, she’ll bodyslam your dad.”

However, the championship contest would soon be overshadowed by the arrival of Big F***ing Joe, who stormed back into the arena and attacked both competitors. Malakia emerged in an apparent attempt to intervene but quickly reconsidered the wisdom of stepping in front of the rampaging giant.

Joe then climbed onto the stage and delivered a verbal assault on both the wrestlers and the audience, branding the crowd a bunch of cucks before repeatedly daring anyone to do something about it. Safe in the knowledge that nobody actually intended to step into the ring with him, he continued antagonising fans long after security would have preferred him not to.

After a much-needed ten-minute break, Tim Strange and Danny Darko provided one of the afternoon’s most entertaining matches.

Before the action had even properly begun, Tim Strange spotted a door amongst the crowd and dragged it into the ring, immediately putting it to use by hiding behind it whenever Danny Darko attempted to get his hands on him. It perfectly summed up the kind of wrestler Strange is; unpredictable, ridiculous and somehow still incredibly effective.

The comedy continued throughout the match. Strange constantly frustrated Darko while keeping the audience laughing. At one point he trapped his opponent and planted an exaggerated kiss before the crowd launched into chants of “Grab his dick and twist it.” In true Tim Strange fashion, he appeared more than happy to entertain the suggestion.

The turning point came when Danny attempted to use Tim’s own signature move, It’s Rodeo Time, against him. The crowd instantly sensed it was a terrible idea. Strange looked genuinely offended that somebody would dare steal his move and from that moment there was little hope left for Darko. Tim fired back with renewed intensity before eventually securing the victory, capping off one of the funniest and most entertaining performances of the day.

The penultimate match of the afternoon was the Deathmatch Grudge Match between former Deathwolf Alton Thronen and the universally despised Jack Bennett.

From the moment Bennett appeared, the crowd made their feelings abundantly clear. Every step towards the ring was accompanied by abuse from fans desperate to see him punished.

What followed was one of the most brutal contests Kumite has produced. Glass, boxes and needles quickly became involved as both competitors attempted to inflict maximum damage. Big F***ing Joe once again found himself unable to stay away, supplying Alton with additional needles.

The most stomach-turning moment came when Alton forced the needles directly into Bennett’s mouth and gums, producing a collective groan from everyone watching.

The violence finally reached its conclusion when Alton delivered a devastating piledriver that sent Bennett crashing through a box filled with nettles, bringing a savage grudge match to a fittingly painful end.

The main event saw BA Rose challenge reigning Deathwolf Champion Antonio Gonzalez.

Antonio entered with the crowd firmly against him. Fans repeatedly warned others to stay away from the champion and seemed desperate to see his first title defence end in defeat.

Instead, the audience were treated to another vicious encounter featuring glass, needles and enough punishment to satisfy even the most hardened deathmatch fan. Bodies crashed through doors, weapons littered the ring and neither competitor appeared remotely interested in preserving their own wellbeing.

It was a fitting conclusion to an afternoon that constantly pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved inside The Hairy Dog.

As soon as the final bell rang, staff moved quickly to clear the venue and begin the enormous task of cleaning up before an evening gig scheduled later that day. Given the sheer amount of broken furniture, shattered objects and general destruction left behind, it was an impressive operation in itself.

The entire event was a credit to both the Kumite Combat Wrestling team and The Hairy Dog staff. Running a show of this scale, particularly one involving such extreme matches, requires an enormous amount of work behind the scenes. The fact that everything ran smoothly while delivering an action-packed afternoon of entertainment speaks volumes about everyone involved.

Tickets are already on sale for KCW V: The Fifth Anniversary at The Hairy Dog on Sunday 16 August 2026. If this sell-out crowd is anything to go by, waiting until the last minute could be a mistake. This event packed the venue to capacity and created one of the loudest atmospheres Kumite has enjoyed in Derby.

The 2026 season is officially underway, and Kumite Combat Wrestling have started exactly where they left off: loud, chaotic, unapologetically violent and impossible to ignore.
