On Saturday 21st February 2026, Derby’s grassroots music scene was out in force as Musik Box hosted a Solo Artist…
By K Futur LOCALDerby’s independent music scene is set for a powerful night of protest songs, storytelling and community spirit as The Indie Night presents Joe Solo live at Mr Shaw’s House on Saturday 9 May, with special guest Calum Baird.
Following a previous sold-out show at the venue, Joe Solo returns to Derby celebrating the release of his latest record, Punk Rock Prepared Us For This. If you care about independent music with meaning, this is one date you need in your diary.
Tickets are £10 in advance, with limited availability on the door. Based on last time, you will want to move quickly.
Joe Solo Returns to Derby After Previous Sell-Out
Joe Solo is no ordinary touring musician. An award-winning songwriter, poet, broadcaster and activist from Scarborough, his journey began back in 1987 fronting a bash-it-out school band. Since then, he has toured seven countries, first as part of pop-punk outfit Lithium Joe and later forging his own path with a distinctive blend of folk, punk and blues.
His live shows are not just performances. They are gatherings. Rooms full of people who believe that music can still say something real.
When Joe Solo last stepped onto the stage at Mr Shaw’s House, the room was packed. The atmosphere was electric. This return date promises the same intensity and intimacy that has made him a cult favourite across the UK’s grassroots circuit.

Punk Rock Prepared Us For This: More Than an Album
The new album title alone tells you everything about Joe Solo’s ethos. Punk Rock Prepared Us For This is a statement. It speaks to resilience, solidarity and the power of community in uncertain times.
Joe has long stood at the intersection of music and activism. In May 2015 he co-founded WE SHALL OVERCOME, a campaign encouraging the music community to respond positively to the hardship caused by austerity. Since its launch, the movement has organised more than 1,100 gigs across 150 towns and cities in nine countries, raising an estimated £550,000 in cash, food, clothing and bedding for those in need.
The campaign won the People’s Choice Award at the Yorkshire Grassroots Music Awards and Joe was later named Human Being of the Year by The Morning Star.
This background is not an add-on to the music. It is embedded within it. Every lyric, every story, every chord progression carries weight. When Joe Solo sings, it feels lived in.
Calum Baird: Scottish Folk-Punk with Bite
Supporting on the night is Calum Baird, an emerging Scottish singer-songwriter who blends folk traditions with punk spirit and sharp social observation.
Calum Baird has built a growing reputation across the UK and internationally, with airplay on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing and BBC Radio Scotland. His music explores modern life, alienation, social change and relationships with honesty and authenticity.
Influenced by artists such as Neil Young, Billy Bragg, The Pogues and Dick Gaughan, Calum carries forward a tradition of songwriting that is both personal and political.
He has toured extensively throughout the UK, Europe and even Cuba, and composed the musical score for the award-winning feature film Exiles (2021).
Critical praise has followed:
“Echoing early Billy Bragg with his dogged optimism” – Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
“I’m a massive fan of what he does – there’s always lyrics that mean something” – Jim Gellatly, Amazing Radio
“Contemporary, contemplative and thoughtful” – Iain Anderson, BBC Radio Scotland
“A wonderful songwriter” – Charlie Ashcroft, Amazing Radio USA
Calum Baird is not simply a support act. He is a perfect pairing for a night rooted in storytelling and conviction.
