A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with allegations of sexual assault said to have taken place on the set of BBC’s long-running soap opera EastEnders, according to The Sun newspaper.

The incident reportedly occurred at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, where the popular show is filmed. Hertfordshire Police confirmed that they received a report of an incident on Eldon Avenue, Borehamwood, on 7 May.

In a statement released this week, the force said: “A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and common assault. The arrest relates to two victims. He has since been released on police bail while enquiries continue.”

The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed at this stage, and it is unclear whether the man is a member of the cast, crew, or another individual associated with the production.

The BBC has not commented on the specific allegations but did issue a statement on behalf of EastEnders, emphasising its commitment to safety on set. A spokesperson for the programme said: “While we would never comment on individuals, EastEnders has on-site security and well-established procedures in place to safeguard the safety and welfare of everyone who works on the show.”

Elstree Studios, located in Borehamwood, has been the home of EastEnders since its inception in 1985 and is a well-known site in the UK television industry.

The alleged incident has sparked concern within the industry, raising questions about on-set safety and the effectiveness of safeguarding procedures in high-pressure media environments. While the investigation remains in its early stages, Hertfordshire Police have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.

The news of the arrest has attracted significant public and media interest, with many awaiting further developments. The BBC is understood to be cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.

No further details have been released at this time. The suspect remains on bail, and the case is expected to continue developing in the coming weeks.
