In a city where grassroots culture doesn’t just survive but constantly reinvents itself, few names carry as much weight as Jay Dean. Musician, producer, promoter and the driving force behind Dubrek Studios, Jay has spent decades shaping Derby’s creative landscape from the ground up.

From packed-out gigs to nurturing the next wave of talent, his journey is deeply tied to the evolution of Derby’s independent music scene-and as Dubrek celebrates 25 years, that influence has never been more visible.

From Nuneaton to Derby: Building Something From Nothing

Jay’s story begins in Nuneaton, an ex-industrial Midlands town where opportunity was limited-but that lack of options became the catalyst.

“I grew up in an ex-industrial Midlands town… being raised in an area with very little opportunities and things to do definitely led me towards music; playing, recording and putting on gigs.”

That DIY instinct carried with him when he moved to Derby in 1995. Where others might have seen limitations, Jay saw potential.

“Moving to Derby allowed me to expand those horizons… the city had a lack of facilities and a lot of homegrown talent so I seized the moment.”

That moment would eventually become Dubrek Studios-now widely recognised as one of the most important cultural spaces in the city, and officially crowned Best Culture Hub at the TRENDNG Awards 2026.

Musician First, Always

Despite wearing multiple hats, Jay is clear about his identity at the core of it all.

“First and foremost I would describe myself as a musician and producer.”

He plays in bands including Splinter Group and Goddesses, while also producing records for artists across the UK. His musical journey includes standout moments that many in the scene would consider legendary-from label signings with his former band Cato, to recording a session for John Peel at Maida Vale, and sharing stages with icons like Dead Kennedys and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth.

These experiences don’t just sit in the past-they inform everything Dubrek represents today.

Dubrek Studios: Derby’s Creative Lifeline

Step inside Dubrek and you’ll find more than just a venue-it’s a living, breathing ecosystem of creativity. Recording studios, rehearsal rooms, a fully equipped live space with stage and lighting-it’s all there, and it’s all in constant use.

From bands and DJs to rappers and singer-songwriters, almost every corner of Derby’s music scene has passed through its doors at some point.

The venue hosts everything from open mics to genre-specific nights, embracing diversity in sound and community. It has also played a role in larger cultural moments, including hosting events as part of the Psychic Dancehall Festival-further cementing its place at the heart of the city’s creative output.

But beyond the facilities, it’s the ethos that defines Dubrek.

“New music and the people making it are the constant source of motivation and inspiration-it’s the reason Dubrek exists.”

The Reality of Running a Grassroots Venue

While Dubrek is a success story in cultural terms, Jay doesn’t shy away from the realities behind the scenes.

“Navigating the financial challenges of a live music venue is not for the faint-hearted… the reality is venues aren’t making money, they’re just about surviving.”

It’s a sentiment echoed across the UK’s grassroots network, even with support from organisations like the Music Venue Trust. Yet despite the pressures, Dubrek continues-not because it’s easy, but because it’s essential.

25 Years of Dubrek-and What Comes Next

As Dubrek approaches its 25th anniversary, Jay’s role has evolved.

“I’ve definitely become more business savvy… I’ve tried to balance this with taking a few risks here and there. Dubrek should be a platform where things can be tried out.”

That balance is evident in what’s coming next. The upcoming Dubrek25 celebration on 30th May is just one piece of a packed calendar that reflects Jay’s relentless drive.

He’s also behind:

  • The Richard J Birkin Vigils 10-year anniversary show at The Wardwick
  • Gig on the Roof and StarDisco at Wirksworth Festival
  • A brand new city-wide festival, Invention, launching in Derby this September

And assisting with Soundcheck, a new youth-focused platform with Culture Derby

Alongside this, he’s continuing to create-with a new Splinter Group album on the way and a Goddesses record nearing completion.

A Platform for Possibility

For Jay, Dubrek has never just been about what happens on stage-it’s about what it enables.

“If you have an idea or want something to happen then crack on with it.”

That ethos has quietly shaped an entire generation of Derby creatives. Whether it’s someone stepping onto a stage for the first time or launching a new project, Dubrek provides the space-and the encouragement-to make it real.

The Driving Force Behind Derby’s Sound

In a city rich with talent, Jay Dean stands out not just for what he’s achieved personally, but for what he’s enabled others to achieve. Dubrek Studios isn’t just a venue-it’s infrastructure for creativity, a launchpad for artists, and a cornerstone of Derby’s cultural identity.

And if there’s one line that sums up his philosophy, it’s simple, direct, and very on-brand:

“In the words of the awful multinational corporation… Just Do It.”
