By K Futur MusicDubrek Studios in Derby came alive with creativity and powerful storytelling during the July edition of the Five Lamps Films event, a regular showcase that continues to support emerging filmmakers and celebrate short-form cinema. The evening brought together local talent, film lovers, and storytellers from across the region – but one documentary in particular stole the spotlight.
Disabled or Not, a deeply personal and thought-provoking documentary directed by Sam Bolton and produced alongside his twin brother Alex, captivated the audience with its honest and eye-opening portrayal of disability within the film industry. The film marks Sam’s directorial debut and demonstrates a maturity and vision far beyond his years.
Sam and Alex Bolton, twins who live with type 2 spinal muscular atrophy, are passionate content creators and aspiring filmmakers. In Disabled or Not, Sam sets out to explore the systemic barriers faced by disabled individuals in media – from lack of accessibility to limited representation on screen. Through powerful interviews with industry professionals who also live with disabilities, the documentary tackles themes of discrimination, typecasting, and the urgent need for change.
