By K Futur TREИDNSETTERSA Defining Moment in Action Sports
On 27 June 1999, the world of skateboarding changed forever. At the X Games in San Francisco, Tony Hawk achieved what many thought impossible – the first-ever documented 900. Two-and-a-half full mid-air revolutions, landed cleanly after multiple failed attempts, sent the crowd into a frenzy. Hawk’s unfiltered cry of “This is the best day of my life” captured the emotion of the moment. It wasn’t just a victory for one man, it was a seismic leap for the sport itself, placing skateboarding firmly in the global spotlight.
The 900 Collection – History on the Auction Block
Julien’s Auctions has announced “The 900 Collection”, a curated sale of nearly 100 artefacts from Hawk’s legendary career. The centrepiece is the very Birdhouse “Falcon 2” skateboard, fitted with Fury brand trucks and unmarked wheels, that Hawk rode during his groundbreaking 900. Estimated at $500,000 to $700,000, it stands as one of the most valuable pieces of sports memorabilia ever to hit the auction market. This is not just a deck – it is a tangible piece of skateboarding history.
Gear That Made History
The collection also includes the black Mosa Sports helmet Hawk wore during the trick, signed and inscribed with “900 in 99, X Games, S.F. 6-27-99” (estimate $5,000-7,000), Boneless brand knee pads from the event ($4,000-6,000), his size 13 black and orange Adio “Tony Hawk” sneakers ($3,000-5,000) and his 1999 X Games credential passes ($1,000-2,000), signed and dated. These are not replicas or commemorative items – they are the exact pieces that were part of skateboarding’s most iconic moment.
From Skate Legend to Global Icon
Tony Hawk’s journey began at the age of nine when his brother gave him a blue fiberglass Bahne skateboard. By fourteen he was a professional, by sixteen he was considered the best in the world. Hawk dominated vert skating, winning 12 world championships in a row and 16 X Games medals. His influence extended beyond competition with the billion-dollar Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game franchise, the Birdhouse Skateboards brand, Hawk Clothing, and a range of signature sporting goods and toys.
A Sale with Purpose
Part of the proceeds from “The 900 Collection” will benefit The Skatepark Project, Hawk’s charitable foundation that has funded over 650 skateparks serving more than six million visitors annually in the United States. This means the auction is not just about collecting history – it’s also about supporting the future of skateboarding.
When and Where
The live auction takes place on 23 September 2025 at 10 AM PT, with the full catalogue available from August. For collectors, fans and anyone who understands the power of a sporting moment, this is a rare chance to own a piece of the day skateboarding truly took flight.
