Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, whose real name was Terry Gene Bollea, has tragically died aged 71 following a cardiac arrest at his home. The larger-than-life WWE Hall of Famer passed away just weeks after reports emerged that he had been hospitalised and gravely ill. Despite speculation surrounding his health, fans around the world held out hope. Sadly, the worst has now been confirmed.

The WWE issued an official statement, saying: “WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”

Born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1953, Terry Bollea rose to fame under the moniker Hulk Hogan and became the face of professional wrestling during the golden era of the 1980s. With his rippling physique, handlebar moustache and unforgettable charisma, he captivated audiences across the globe. His signature catchphrases — “Whatcha gonna do, brother?” and “Train, say your prayers, eat your vitamins” — became part of the cultural lexicon. “Hulkamania” wasn’t just a slogan — it was a movement.

As a mainstay of the then-WWF (now WWE), Hogan headlined the first several WrestleMania events and became a household name, credited with helping professional wrestling transition from a niche sport into mainstream global entertainment. His battles with the likes of Andre the Giant, Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior remain etched in the memories of millions.

Away from the ring, Hogan also ventured into film, television, and business, cementing his status as one of the most recognisable figures in American pop culture. His charisma transcended wrestling, making him an icon far beyond the squared circle.

Tributes have poured in from around the world. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, a long-time associate of Hogan who once shared the WrestleMania stage with him, issued a heartfelt statement: “Hulk Hogan was not only a great friend but a true American icon. He helped shape the entertainment world and brought joy to millions of people around the globe. My deepest condolences to his family. He will never be forgotten.”

Other celebrities, athletes and fans have also paid tribute, with many praising Hogan’s role in shaping their childhoods and in defining the golden age of wrestling. Social media has been flooded with tributes, fan art, and iconic match clips in remembrance.

In recent years, Hogan had kept a lower profile, but he remained a beloved figure in the wrestling community. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice — once as an individual in 2005, and again in 2020 as part of the nWo faction.

The passing of Hulk Hogan marks the end of an era. For generations of fans, he was more than just a wrestler — he was a hero, a showman, and a symbol of entertainment at its loudest and most outrageous. Hulkamania may have been born in the ‘80s, but its legacy will endure for decades to come.

Rest in peace, Hulk. You truly were the real American.
