The long-awaited Futurama: Hit & Run mod has officially arrived, and fans of both franchises are buzzing. Released a few days ago on Donut Team’s Mod Bakery platform, the project reimagines the 2003 cult classic The Simpsons: Hit & Run inside the futuristic world of Futurama. The result is a full-scale fan creation that blends open-world driving, sci-fi humour and nostalgia in equal measure.

Who’s behind the project

The mod is developed by Slurm Team, an independent group of creators within the Donut Team community. Donut Team are well-known for their long-running work providing modding tools, resources and total-conversion projects for The Simpsons: Hit & Run. They describe themselves as a small, passionate group of fans who maintain the platform ad-free and rely entirely on community donations. This latest release is one of their most ambitious yet, pushing the limits of what’s possible within the original game’s framework.

What’s been made so far

This first demo, version 0.1.0, transforms roughly a quarter of the game’s map into Futurama’s iconic New New York. Everything has been built from scratch — from buildings and vehicles to character models and gags — all designed to replicate the tone and humour of Matt Groening’s sci-fi world.

The release currently includes:

  • Four story missions and a bonus mission
  • Three street races and one wager race
  • Six drivable vehicles
  • Nine gags and a hidden secret gag
  • Four character costumes
  • A new soundtrack and sound effects inspired by Futurama

Players can freely explore a section of New New York, race through the streets in futuristic vehicles, and take on missions for the Planet Express crew. It’s a loving recreation that blends the chaotic fun of Hit & Run with the atmosphere of Futurama’s 31st-century universe.

What state it’s in

The developers have been clear that this is an early demo rather than a full release. Some dialogue uses temporary AI-generated voice lines, which will later be replaced by recordings from professional voice actors. There are still bugs and unfinished sections, but the foundations are solid — and the project has already drawn widespread praise from the community, with tens of thousands of downloads in just a few days.

Even the original Hit & Run lead designer expressed enthusiasm on social media, saying he “wants to play it”, which many fans saw as a seal of approval.

A fan project that feels almost official

What makes Futurama: Hit & Run stand out isn’t just nostalgia — it’s how complete it feels even in demo form. The textures, the level design, the humour, and even the way missions flow all feel faithful to both the source material and the original game’s structure. It captures that same chaotic charm that made The Simpsons: Hit & Run a cult classic, while adding the sleek sci-fi style and wit of Futurama.

It’s the kind of crossover that fans have dreamed about for years, but never expected to see realised with this level of polish. If future updates deliver the promised new areas, professional voice-overs and more missions, Futurama: Hit & Run could easily become the definitive fan-made revival of a game that’s been stuck in licensing limbo for two decades.

The Futurama: Hit & Run mod is available now through Donut Team’s Mod Bakery website for players who own the original PC version of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Installation requires Donut Team’s mod launcher, and users should back up their files before playing.
