In a city where grassroots culture continues to evolve at its own pace, few names have carved out a lane quite like Ashley Fearn and Guy Shipley. As the duo behind BUNKER, one of Derby’s most recognisable house music brands, they’ve spent the past decade shaping dance floors, nurturing talent, and proving that you don’t need a major city postcode to build something that resonates.

Born and built in Derby, BUNKER didn’t arrive into an oversaturated scene. In fact, that absence of noise is exactly what gave it room to grow.

“Derby is where we’re based,” Ashley explains, “and I would say it’s been a great environment to build a house music brand as there wasn’t too much going on when we first started back in 2015. So it was good for us to get some parties and play our music in our home.”

That early gap in the city’s dance music offering became an opportunity. Rather than competing for space, BUNKER created its own. What started as a platform for their sound quickly evolved into something bigger-a consistent presence in Derby nightlife that would go on to host major names, sell out events, and extend beyond the city limits.

Ashley’s journey into music feels less like a decision and more like an inevitability. A DJ, producer, events manager and social media operator, his relationship with music runs deep.

“I genuinely love music and have been obsessed with all types of dance music from a young age,” he says. “Going Ibiza as a kid opened me up to it even more. As well as this, my dad’s a DJ too, so it was always going to happen.”

That early exposure shaped not only his taste, but his approach. There’s a clear thread running through BUNKER’s identity – an emphasis on authenticity, discovery, and energy that goes beyond predictable line-ups.

“I’m inspired by DJs who don’t just play the hits,” Ashley explains. “I love seeing DJs who play music nobody has heard before and that’s something that inspires my nights and when I’m selecting DJs to play.”

It’s this philosophy that has helped BUNKER stand out. While big names like Pawsa and Sosa have passed through their line-ups, the brand has never relied solely on headline appeal. Instead, it balances credibility with curation, giving space to emerging artists while still delivering the kind of nights that draw crowds.

Over the years, those crowds have grown. From packed-out Derby events to festival stages at Groovebox and Forbidden Forest, BUNKER has steadily built momentum.

“There’s been quite a lot of standout moments,” Ashley reflects. “Having festival stages at Groovebox and Forbidden Forest, selling out parties with big name headliners in Derby – the likes of Pawsa and Sosa. But also personally, releasing music on Moxy Muzik back in late 2024 was a huge goal ticked off for me (and Rob) as AR38.”

That release marked a significant step into the production world, cementing Ashley’s position not just as a promoter, but as an artist in his own right. It’s a dual identity that feeds directly back into BUNKER-understanding both sides of the industry allows for sharper decisions, stronger line-ups, and a deeper connection to the music itself.

But like much of the nightlife sector, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The post-Covid landscape has forced promoters across the UK to rethink how they operate, and Derby is no exception.

“The changing climate with regards to cost of living, and drinking and night out culture is the biggest challenge,” Ashley says. “It’s in massive decline, especially in smaller towns and cities compared to pre-Covid times. People can’t afford to go out all the time anymore.”

Rather than resist that shift, BUNKER adapted.

“We used to do events every Friday and Saturday,” he explains. “Over time, we’ve gone to monthly, and now less than monthly-this helps us build hype. Especially when there’s a massive amount of big events now, it’s all about staying relevant.”

That ability to pivot has become one of BUNKER’s defining strengths. Whether it’s scaling back frequency to increase demand, experimenting with daytime events, or investing in younger talent, the brand has continuously evolved to meet the moment.

And that evolution is far from over.

“We’re working on our promo for the 11th April event in Derby,” Ashley says, “and then we’ll be working on our event plans for the rest of the year as we’re taking BUNKER out of Derby and to places like Nottingham and Leicester.”

It’s a natural next step. After establishing a solid foundation at home, expansion feels less like a gamble and more like a progression. The DNA remains the same – quality music, thoughtful curation, and a focus on experience-but the audience is growing.

At its core, BUNKER isn’t just about nights out. It’s about resilience, reinvention, and understanding the rhythm of culture as much as the music itself.

“You’ve got to be willing to adapt and change,” Ashley says. “Pivot when things aren’t working how they used to – change tactics. We’ve done this multiple times and reinvented ourselves from the amount of events, focusing on young talent, daytime events, night events, festivals. It’s all about learnings and finding ways to improve and reinvent.”

That mindset extends into his advice for others trying to carve their own path.

“Keep focused. I’ve been working constantly on music, events and DJing for 12 or 13 years now-you’ve got to give it your all. Don’t be scared to change direction. Focus on yourself and surround yourself with good people on the same journey.”

It’s a sentiment that mirrors BUNKER’s story. What started as a response to a quiet scene has become a key part of Derby’s nightlife identity – not by standing still, but by constantly moving.

For those looking to experience it first-hand, BUNKER continues to evolve in real time, both on and off the dance floor.

As Derby’s cultural landscape continues to grow, BUNKER stands as proof that with the right vision, consistency, and willingness to adapt, something built locally can carry far beyond it.
