British music has lost one of its true originals with the unexpected passing of Gary Mani Mounfield at the age…
By K Futur MUSICOn Thursday 16th October, The Vic Inn in Derby hosted an unforgettable evening of live music, as Musik Box presented The Underground Music Scene. Despite the cold October night, the turnout was incredible, with the venue packed full of energy, passion and local talent. Five bands took to the stage, each bringing their own unique sound and style, making it one of the most eclectic and exciting gigs of the season.
Blind Notion
Kicking off the night were Blind Notion, delivering a lively mix of indie pop infused with funky rhythms and infectious melodies. Their sound had the perfect balance of groove and feel-good energy, getting the crowd moving early on. The vocals were beautiful, full of warmth and charm, and the whole set had a polished, summery feel that instantly lifted the room. A brilliant opener that set the tone for the rest of the night.

Swan
Next up were Swan, who cranked things up with their heavy indie rock sound. Fast-paced riffs, shredding leads and thick distortion filled the room, with a performance that at times channelled Queens of the Stone Age while still keeping that gritty UK indie flavour. Their cover of Foo Fighters’ Everlong was a crowd favourite, with everyone fully engaged, and their original material proved they’re more than capable of commanding a stage. Swan brought the energy levels through the roof, and the audience responded in kind.

Vegas on Bass
Hailing all the way from Italy, Vegas on Bass brought a fiery garage rock set that blended raw power with infectious energy. Their fast-paced rhythms and punchy vocals made it impossible to stand still. The interplay between lead guitar and vocals gave the performance an electric edge, while touches of synth added extra depth. Think The Killers meets The Hives — danceable, loud, and absolutely full of life. Derby loved them, and hopefully they’ll be back soon for another round.

Silent Confidant
Then came Silent Confidant, a duo who describe their sound as Industrial Scuzz Metal — and they weren’t exaggerating. Their set was an explosion of volume and aggression, shaking the walls of The Vic Inn. Heavy, crunchy riffs collided with sleazy solos and thunderous drums that demanded attention. The frontman’s ability to switch between melodic singing and raw, guttural screams was impressive, and the crowd responded with one of the wildest mosh pits of the night. It was brutal, loud and brilliant. Silent Confidant brought chaos in the best possible way, and it’s safe to say nobody will forget their set anytime soon.

Porcelain Girl
Closing out the night were Porcelain Girl, who despite it being only their second gig, played like seasoned pros. Their sound fused Midwest emo with pop punk and hardcore elements, resulting in a fresh yet nostalgic vibe. Every track hit hard, with emotional vocals that switched effortlessly from soft and melodic to harsh and powerful. The crowd was fully immersed in the performance, with mosh pits breaking out throughout the set. Their now-trademark Backstreet Boys cover added a playful twist that somehow fit perfectly within their dynamic sound. The chemistry between band members was undeniable, the guitar hooks and drum work were tight and precise, and their stage presence was magnetic. Porcelain Girl proved themselves one of Derby’s most promising new acts.

Conclusion
All in all, Musik Box Presents The Underground Music Scene was another outstanding night of live music at one of Derby’s most beloved small venues. From indie pop to industrial scuzz metal, the night showcased the incredible diversity and talent within the local and underground scene.
