British music has lost one of its true originals with the unexpected passing of Gary Mani Mounfield at the age…
By K Futur MUSICTucked just off the beaten track in Derby city centre on George street. The Orange Tree is the kind of place you stumble upon and instantly feel like you’ve discovered something special. With its understated frontage and soft glow from low-hanging industrial lights, this cocktail bar effortlessly blends retro charm with modern cool.
Inside, exposed brick walls and faded vintage posters set the tone. The décor feels curated but relaxed, like stepping into a mid-century lounge with a twist. Cool private booths offer a sense of intimacy, while the soundtrack of smooth house beats played by a live DJ gives the space a vibrant energy without being overwhelming.
The cocktail menu is a genuine highlight. Classics sit comfortably alongside inventive specials, with a dedicated board offering two themed cocktails for just £12. On the night we visited, the drinks were inspired by Disney characters. The creativity behind each drink made the experience feel personal and fun.
Outside, a lively little garden buzzes with chatter and clinking glasses. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy summer evenings or a cheeky mid-week drink. Upstairs, additional seating is available, and it’s often used for private events, giving the venue even more versatility.
The Orange Tree feels like Derby’s best-kept secret — a quirky, effortlessly stylish cocktail bar with bags of personality and a laid-back but lively atmosphere. Whether you’re after a quiet booth, a night of cocktails, or just a place to enjoy good music and vibes, this bar ticks every box.
It may well be my new favourite bar in Derby. And I suspect it might become yours too.
