Derby’s skate scene hit a major milestone on Wednesday 8th April as FLO Skatepark officially opened to the public-marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the city.

After months of anticipation, the launch struck a perfect balance: a genuine buzz in the air, but with a relaxed, welcoming feel that gave young skaters the chance to properly explore the park for the first time.

A Buzz Without the Chaos

TRENDNG were down at FLO for opening day, where the first session welcomed 5–17-year-olds into the park. There was a clear sense of excitement throughout-this was something Derby has been waiting for-but it wasn’t overwhelming.

Instead, it felt like a steady, positive energy. A chance for young skaters to take their time, find their lines, and really enjoy the space.

Some were straight into the bowl, carving it out like they’d been waiting all winter for it. Others eased into the street section, testing rails, ramps, and transitions. It was one of those sessions where you could see confidence building in real time.

A Long-Awaited Addition for Derby

One parent we spoke to summed it up perfectly. She’d brought her two boys along, explaining they’d previously travelled over to Nottingham to skate at FLO-but having this level of facility in Derby is a game changer.

Her two lads wasted no time getting involved, spending most of their session between the bowl and street section, both quickly emerging as standout areas of the park.

And that’s the key takeaway: even in a relaxed opening session, the quality of FLO Skatepark speaks for itself.

Built by the Scene, For the Scene

This isn’t just a new venue-it’s a project deeply rooted in Derby’s skate culture.

Legendary local skate shop Rollersnakes are a main sponsor, bringing over 40 years of heritage and support to the space. Their involvement alone tells you how important this is for the local scene.

Also in the building was Zah Zah Binks, continuing work on a huge in-park mural. The idea is simple but powerful-regular visitors will watch the artwork evolve over time, becoming part of the skatepark’s identity and growth.

It’s these touches that make FLO feel like more than just ramps and concrete-it’s a cultural space.

Sessions Now Live

Everything is now fully up and running, with sessions available to book online. The programme caters for a range of ages and abilities, including specialist sessions for those looking to develop their skills further.

Positioned right in Derby city centre, alongside the new padel courts, FLO Skatepark is already injecting fresh energy into the area-bringing movement, creativity, and youth culture back into the heart of the city.

The FLO Opening Jam: Where It Goes Up a Gear

If the opening day was a measured introduction, the FLO Opening Jam on 18th April (10am–6pm) is where things properly kick off-and this is where the buzz is set to build.

Here’s what’s locked in:

  • Over £800 in cash and prizes up for grabs
  • Bowl Jam hosted by Rollersnakes – bringing their authority in the scene to one of the park’s key features
  • Vert Jam hosted by Skateboard GB x Subway – a huge collaboration supporting the vert ramp and pushing progression
  • Free half-pipe lessons for those looking to level up
  • Open skate sessions on the street course
  • Giveaways from Subway throughout the day

This isn’t just an event-it’s a statement. A full-scale celebration of what FLO Skatepark represents and where it’s heading.

A Strong Start-and Just the Beginning

The opening of FLO Skatepark might have started with a relaxed first session, but the energy is there. You can feel it building.

Derby has always had the talent, the community, and the passion for skating. Now it finally has the facility to match.

And if opening day was anything to go by, this place is only going one way.
