By K Futur TREИDNSETTERSOn a bustling Saturday evening in the heart of Derby, Sadler Gate is alive once again with the energy of people flocking to bars, restaurants and late-night spots. Nestled among the activity is Carnivore Steakhouse & Bar, a dark, moody gem that calls you in with its bold red neon sign and the mouth-watering scent of grilled meat drifting into the street. If you’re craving steak, this is the place to be.
We decided to see what all the fuss was about and ventured inside. The entrance opens into a stylish little bar area with a few stools, a great spot for a quick drink or casual nibble. But the real experience lies beyond. Downstairs was packed – always a good sign – so we were taken upstairs and seated at a spacious table by a large window that offered a great view of Sadler Gate below.
The décor is effortlessly cool – dark painted walls, industrial lighting and edgy posters give the place an understated, urban feel. The vibe is relaxed but buzzy, the kind of place that feels perfect for both date nights and pre-drinks with friends.
As for the food – Carnivore certainly lives up to its name. We ordered a sirloin and a ribeye steak, both cooked to absolute perfection, beautifully seared with a melt-in-the-mouth centre. To accompany, we picked mac and cheese, corn on the cob, hand-cut chips and a couple of Cajun chicken skewers. The red wine jus added a rich depth of flavour to the steaks, enhancing the dish without overpowering the meat. The corn was particularly excellent – juicy, smoky, and full of flavour. The mac and cheese was indulgently cheesy, though a touch more seasoning wouldn’t go amiss.
The staff were friendly, attentive, and made sure we were well looked after. Service was speedy and smooth despite the Saturday night rush, which added to the overall positive experience.
Whether you’re in for a full steak dinner or just a drink and some snacks before heading out on the town, Carnivore hits the mark. It’s perfectly placed on Sadler Gate to catch the early evening crowd, especially on warmer nights when the street is buzzing with life.
For those hunting for top-quality steak in Derby city centre, Carnivore Steakhouse & Bar is a strong contender. Cool atmosphere, good food, and a great location – it’s definitely one to put on your list.
