Sunday night at The Victoria Inn delivered one of the most entertaining grassroots gigs Derby has seen in a while, as Manchester post-punk outfit Loose Articles brought their chaotic, witty and hugely energetic live show to the city alongside support from Bugeye.

The early-starting show, running from around 7pm until roughly 9:30pm, gave the evening a slightly different atmosphere to the usual late-night Victoria Inn gigs, but the packed room and constant crowd energy made it feel every bit as lively.

Opening the night were Bugeye, whose sharp blend of post-punk, garage rock and new wave influences immediately got the room moving. The London band brought plenty of angular guitars, driving basslines and deadpan humour to the stage, setting the tone perfectly for what was to come later in the evening.

A huge part of the night’s success also came down to the sound inside the venue. The sound team at The Victoria Inn absolutely nailed it from start to finish. Honestly, this was probably the best we’ve ever heard a gig sound at the Vic. Every instrument sat perfectly in the mix, the vocals stayed clear throughout and the low-end hit hard without muddying the room. Both bands massively benefited from it.

By the time Loose Articles took to the stage, the anticipation in the room had properly built. Going into the gig, we were already excited to finally see the band live after spending time listening to them online beforehand. Their songs are tongue-in-cheek, catchy and packed with personality, balancing wiry post-punk energy with sharp humour and massive hooks. Somehow though, the live show still exceeded expectations.

If anything, Loose Articles sounded even better live than they do on record. The Manchester four-piece, made up of Natalie Wardle on bass and vocals, Tree Nah on guitar and vocals, Erin Caine on keyboards and Louise Rivett on drums, brought a level of energy and confidence that instantly lifted the room.

The set opened with a droning, noise-heavy track that instantly brought early IDLES to mind, all tension and repetition before kicking fully into gear.

Loose Articles understand exactly how to work a room. While the musicianship throughout the night was tight, what really elevated the set was the band’s personality and showmanship. They introduced songs with the confidence of a much bigger touring act, constantly interacting with the crowd and making the entire performance feel loose, spontaneous and genuinely fun.

Before playing “Are You A Welder?”, the band asked if there were any welders in the audience, getting laughs across the room before the song had even started. “Cringe of Hinge”, introduced as the band’s latest single, was another standout moment and showed exactly why Loose Articles are continuing to gain momentum.

Elsewhere during the set, the band replaced the traditional hardcore-style wall of death with what they jokingly described as a “wall of limbo”, with vocalist Natalie Wardle stepping directly into the crowd and stretching the microphone cable across the room while audience members limboed underneath it. It was chaotic, funny and completely in keeping with the atmosphere Loose Articles created throughout the evening.

The band looked the to be the complete package, matching sharp stage presence with constant movement and crowd interaction throughout the set. Combined with genuinely strong songwriting, it made the performance feel far bigger than a small Sunday night grassroots show in Derby.

Away from the stage, Loose Articles also have strong ties to the wider UK alternative music scene. Bassist and vocalist Natalie Wardle has additionally been involved with booking and programming work connected to Bearded Theory, helping shape line-ups for one of the country’s most respected independent festivals.

By the end of the night, it was obvious why Loose Articles continue to build momentum across the UK post-punk circuit. Backed by a strong opening set from Bugeye and some of the best sound The Victoria Inn has hosted in years, Sunday’s show felt like exactly what grassroots live music should be: loud, unpredictable, funny and packed with personality.
