The Hairy Dog was the fullest we’ve seen it in a while when Blaze Bayley brought his Iron Maiden anniversary show to Derby on Saturday 3 October. With no support act, the evening belonged to Blaze and his band, and he began by asking everyone to forget their worries, take in the performance and make a memory they could return to afterwards. His interaction with the audience carried through the night, moving between personal stories, encouragement and some fairly blunt crowd banter.

From Wolfsbane to Iron Maiden

Blaze began his career fronting Wolfsbane in 1984 before joining Iron Maiden in 1994, recording The X Factor and Virtual XI during his five years with the band. He subsequently built a substantial solo career, and this anniversary show brought those different chapters together, backed by musicians from Absolva.

The Maiden years supplied much of the set, with ‘Lord of the Flies’, ‘Judgement of Heaven’, ‘Sign of the Cross’ and ‘The Clansman’ appearing alongside ‘Man on the Edge’ and ‘Futureal’. His own catalogue was represented by songs including ‘Born as a Stranger’, ‘The Brave’, ‘Calling You Home’ and ‘A Thousand Years’, giving the evening a reach beyond the anniversary material.

Songs and Stories in a Busy Hairy Dog

‘Lightning Strikes Twice’ was amongst the highlights in a performance that kept the audience involved throughout. Blaze regularly asked for more from the room, encouraging people to make themselves heard and treating the exchanges between songs as part of the show. The turnout clearly meant something to him, and he acknowledged the significance of having the venue packed for a performance under his own name.

Before ‘Calling You Home’, he spoke about touring and being away from loved ones, giving the song a personal introduction rooted in his life on the road. His reflections on good and bad times added some emotional weight to the evening, particularly alongside his opening request for everyone to put their worries aside.

He also recalled seeing Dio in 1987 and how that experience influenced what he wanted to do with his life. Hearing him describe a gig that had stayed with him for decades gave some context to his own approach, especially his determination to get the crowd involved and give them something to remember.

Virus and Some Unfiltered Crowd Banter

Another introduction addressed the fake accounts impersonating him online. Blaze described the people behind them as a virus before launching into ‘Virus’, turning his frustration into a fitting lead-in to the Maiden track.

The crowd had its own ideas when he asked everyone to scream and decided the response wasn’t loud enough. A chant of “you fat bastard” followed, adding a less sentimental moment to an evening that moved comfortably between reflection and humour. His willingness to engage with the audience gave those exchanges room to happen, and the packed venue responded in kind.

A Night Worth Turning Out For

Blaze’s connection with the crowd gave the show much of its character, with the stories around the songs helping make this more personal than a straightforward run through his Maiden catalogue. ‘Calling You Home’ brought the realities of touring into the room, while the Dio recollection offered a glimpse of the music fan behind the frontman.

Seeing The Hairy Dog this busy was encouraging, and the turnout gave Blaze an audience ready to join in. Between the Maiden material, his own songs and the constant conversation with the crowd, there was plenty to justify getting down to the venue, and plenty to remember afterwards.
